Brown Paper Box Co.
If/Then

Pay: $200 Stipend

Description:

Elizabeth, a city planner, moves back to New York to restart her life in the city of infinite possibilities. When her carefully designed plans collide with fate, Elizabeth's life splits into two parallel paths. If/Then follows both stories, simultaneously, through the intersection of choice and chance.

With unforgettable songs and a deeply moving story by the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning creators of Next to Normal, If/Then paints a moving portrait of the lives we lead, as well as the lives we might have led. Brown Paper Box Co. is proud to present the regional premiere of this original new musical.

Character Type/Restrictions:

IF/THEN will be comprised of a talented ensemble of actor-singers of varying sizes, gender-expressions and identities, racial and ethnic-identities, and abilities. The character breakdown below is a suggestion from the licensor, but BPBCo. welcomes actors of all identities and experiences to audition for the role they feel most confident in and drawn to. We are excited about the identities that every actor brings to the conversation, and we hope to have a cast that reflects the inherent diversity that is so important to New York City.

Elizabeth: 30s. Smart, straightforward, deliberate, hungry for joy but afraid it may never come. Along with big belt, must have ability to float and mix higher notes.

Kate: 20s-40s. A native New Yorker, incurable romantic, and tough-as-nails kindergarten teacher. Big belt with a nice mix.

Lucas: 30s. An activist, blogger, urban farmer, homesteader, barista, and citizen of the world. Dedicated to fighting injustice and dismissive of normative values.

Josh: Late 20s-30s. Raised in the Midwest, trained in medicine, tempered by two tours as an Army doctor, confident in his work, but less so in his love life. Steady, pragmatic, plainspoken.

Stephen: 30s-40s. A charismatic, confident mover and shaker in city government. He's smart and somewhat glib; idealistic but also slick.

Elena: 20s. Fresh from receiving her MA in urban studies; she becomes Elizabeth's protege. Big belt with a nice mix.

Anne: 20s-40s. Kate's girlfriend, and then wife, and in many ways her perfect counterpart. Logical, frank, calm, unflappable. Belt with a nice mix.

David: Late 20s-30s. Lucas' boyfriend. A successful surgeon who's ready to meet the right man, settle down, and start a family. Smart without the need to show it.

Ensemble: 20s-30s. A variety of New York City characters. Guitar-playing a plus
