Description:

1776 is a musical with music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone. The story is based on the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It dramatizes the efforts of John Adams to persuade his colleagues to vote for American independence and to sign the document.

There are roles for 19 men and 2 women in MadKap's production of 1776. Some of the roles are outlined below:

* John Adams (Massachusetts) - Age 41. High baritone or medium tenor.

* Benjamin Franklin (Pennsylvania) - He is an energetic, older man, 70 years old, but often acts much younger. Baritone or low tenor.

* Thomas Jefferson (Virginia) - 33 years old. Medium tenor or high baritone. Traditionally played by an actor taller than average .

* John Dickinson (Pennsylvania) - Age 44. Baritone Dickinson is the primary adversary of the show, portrayed as opposing Independence.

* Edward Rutledge (South Carolina) - 26 years old. Strong Baritone with solid acting skills

* Abigail Adams - 32 years old. Soprano or Mezzo.

* Martha Jefferson - 27 years old. Mezzo or soprano

* Richard Henry Lee (Virginia) - Age 45. Baritone Speaks and sings with a noticeable southern dialect

* The Courier - Age 18 - High Baritone or low tenor

Time Commitment:

Rehearsals: Generally, rehearsals are Sunday-Thursday from 7pm-10pm in Skokie. Rehearsals begin in May. Performance dates: June 28 - July 21, 2019 at the Skokie Theatre. Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30, Sundays at 2:00 pm and one Wednesday matinee.

Material To Prepare:

Please prepare a one-minute cut of a Broadway selection. If you are auditioning for either Franklin or Adams, please prepare a one minute monologue in addition to your vocal piece. Please let us know that you are auditioning for Franklin or Adams so that we can allow extra time. Please bring marked sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. ALL roles must have a vocal audition. There will be singing auditions, and short readings at callbacks, along with a simple movement audition. The ensemble will be culled from the various speaking and singing roles in the show.
