About Face Theatre
Dada Woof Papa Hot

Pay: $500

Description:

About Face Theatre is looking to cast three paid understudies for our upcoming Chicago premiere this winter of Dada Woof Papa Hot by Peter Parnell.

The play is about the unique challenges of modern day parenting for two gay couples, how it has both lived up to and defied expectations, how it collides with identity, and how it's changed their lives and the lives of their closest friends in the process.

Character Descriptions
ALAN 40's - 50s. Gay. A journalist whose anxieties about being a father to his 3-year old daughter reflect his own ambivalence and insecurities. Witty, self-deprecating, just barely in touch with his own repressed anger.

ROB 40s. Alan's husband. A psychiatrist in private practice who is far more comfortable with being a father. A great listener, who can be judgmental but also warmly accepting of others' neuroses, especially Alan's.

MICHAEL 40s- 50s. A college friend of Alan's. A Broadway composer who is made attractive to women more by his warm, at times needy personality than any necessarily obvious charm or good looks, though he could have those too.

SERENA 40s. Michael's wife. A foil to Michael who can either be more controlling and cooler than he is, or a warmer, nurturing earth-mother both to him and their two young children. A smart, witty, highly responsible woman who is a bit obsessed with her kids.

JULIA WHITTY Late 30s. An actress. Current star of an HBO TV-series about marital infidelity. Attractive in either a beautiful or charismatic way, but an actress nonetheless. Self-involved, but more knowing than others assume. Married to a photographer and has a young son. She is currently having an affair with Michael. Understudies will be cast to audition for/cover multiple roles.

We perform at Theater Wit and typically run Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sundays at 3pm (Exceptions are a Wednesday added preview, and a Saturday matinee closing weekend.) Understudies are invited to any/all rehearsals but AFT doesn't require full-time attendance. Understudies are expected to attend as much as they feel necessary to learn their track(s). Similarly, understudies aren't required to be present for all of tech, but are asked to be around for a majority of tech rehearsals and are expected at all tech run-throughs in order to learn changes to blocking and register tech elements. Once the show is open understudies are asked to attend once a week understudy rehearsals (as scheduled between stage manager and understudies.) Understudies at AFT are asked to see the show once a week after opening, performance attendance isn't required otherwise, but understudies are asked to call-in prior to the show and be within reasonable distance around showtimes in case they are needed. Understudies need to be available for all performances.
