FYI Performance Company

Gray Area

Category: Non-Equity Audition
Pay: Stipend

FYI Performance Company is currently seeking actors for GRAY AREA, a new participatory play about consent. We are looking for 5 people of any gender to engage in this complex and joyful play about how we learn to navigate each other's boundaries and desires. As a newly devised work, the ensemble will be encouraged to help shape the existing script. Stipend is $100.

Many of us "get" consent: yes means yes, no means no. But what if the reality is more complicated than that? When our culture lacks a shared vocabulary for active consent, we are left lost in the space between definitions spelled out in black-and-white. Gray Area asks the difficult questions about where our ideas about consent come from, how they get enacted in our lives, and what happens when our reality doesn't live up to our ideals. How do we navigate these murky waters, and -- when something goes wrong -- how do we, and our communities, heal?

Monday, March 20th:

Thursday, March 23rd: 6-7PM 7-8PM 8-9PM Callbacks:

All auditions happen at Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health, 719 S. State Street #400, buzz "ICAH & CFS" to enter building.

This play requires actors who are adaptable, can think on their feet, and can confidently lead in-role conversations with an audience. We will practice structured improvisation and FYI facilitation techniques throughout rehearsal and performance.

NOTE: This play offers a queer perspective, and as such Queer, Trans, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-Conforming actors are highly encouraged to submit. Actors of color also strongly encouraged to submit.

-Tom - Early/mid 20s. Masculine, any gender. Shy but not stoic. The friend you'd call to vent. They like feeling good at sex. They've had an experience which is hard for them to name as assault, but it happened and it's there all the same.

-Vi - Early/mid 20s. Femme, any gender. Likes to stay moving but isn't flighty. Has a smile they've learned not to let people take advantage of. Sex isn't just a way to connect to others but a way they connect to themselves: it's adrenaline, it's chaos, it's comfort.

-Ensemble (3) - a group of individuals who play people in the main characters' lives: friends, family, past-partners, one-night stands, sixth grade teachers - people who've shaped their ideas of consent. Specifically seeking masculine 30s-40s actor for one track; other ensemble members any gender, age, and race.

FYI (For Youth Inquiry), a division of the Illinois Caucus of Adolescent Health, develops participatory plays that open the door to safe and engaging conversations about sexual health and sexual violence. We believe in artistically rigorous performance as a site of active inquiry and sustainable change.
