Lazy Susan Theatre Co
Not Bitter Nor Sweet

Pay: Stipend

Description:

'Not Bitter Nor Sweet' will be Lazy Susan Theatre Company's second devised production! It will take place during Chicago Theatre Week and over the course of the season of love. Set in a bustling, modern matchmaking agency, we'll weave a story drawn from the threads of our own lives and imagination. With our words as the foundation, we'll craft a play that explores the intersections of love, connection, and the twists of fate-blurring the line between reality and fiction.

This show is about love and what it means to us. Whether it's self love, platonic love, romantic love, love gained or loved lost, and how it has shapes us into who we are today.
We invite you to join us into the vivid tapestry of your memories, dreams, and desires as we embark on a journey to unravel a timeless mystery... what is love? Auditions in December, 2024. Stay tuned for more information.

Directed by Nealie Tinlin and Hannah Loessberg.

Seeking:
Calling actor/writers/devising enthusiasts

Please submit a 3-5 minute portion of your self-written and performed piece (the full-length should be around 10 minutes so that we have something to work with as a devising ensemble). We have included some prompting questions and source material to help guide you in the writing process, please use these to shape your piece. Since your writing will then be crafted into a stage performance, we give you permission to be as creative as you can with props, movement, editing, or actions. It can be simple, it can be grand, it can be goofy, add elements to bring it to life. Just remember we want to see YOU and the STORY you would like to share with us and a future audience. Throw the usual self tape rules out the window! Don't worry if it's not perfect, there will be time to workshop your writing and see how it fits into a larger narrative. We ask that you be gentle with yourself and do not share experiences or content that would be detrimental to your well-being.

If you have ANY questions please email us at lazysusantheatreco@gmail.com!

Here are some prompts for your imagination:
Write about a moment of bittersweetness of someone who has come and/or gone in your life. How did they impact where you are or who you are right now?
What loves have shaped who you are?
If you had one more chance to say something to someone, what would you say? What pieces are left after you don't know someone anymore?
Write about a food item as it pertains to a relationship you had with someone.
Write about your love language.
What is your favorite memory of someone?

A poem to inspire you:
To a Stranger - Walt Whitman
Passing stranger! you do not know how longingly I look upon you,
You must be he I was seeking, or she I was seeking, (it comes to me as of a dream,)
I have somewhere surely lived a life of joy with you,
All is recall'd as we flit by each other, fluid, affectionate, chaste, matured,
You grew up with me, were a boy with me or a girl with me,
I ate with you and slept with you, your body has become not yours only nor left my body mine only,
You give me the pleasure of your eyes, face, flesh, as we pass, you take of my beard, breast, hands, in return,
I am not to speak to you, I am to think of you when I sit alone or wake at night alone,
I am to wait, I do not doubt I am to meet you again,
I am to see to it that I do not lose you
