Arms And The Man

Ruth Page Center For Arts
1016 N. Dearborn Pkwy Chicago

During the last days of the Serbo-Bulgarian war, a mercenary soldier named Bluntschli takes refuge from pursuing Bulgarian forces in the bedroom of Raina Petkoff, an idealistic Bulgarian girl engaged to marry another man. Raina helps Bluntschli escape that night-but then the war ends, the men come home, and the mysterious Bluntschli unexpectedly returns to the Petkoff household as well. In one of his most scintillating romantic comedies, Shaw examines both the futility of war and the hypocrisies of the human heart in ARMS AND THE MAN.

Chicago Reader - Highly Recommended

"...It helps that this play doesn't feature the long discourses of other Shaw classics. (Hello, Saint Joan!) The sharp, elegant writing comes through with little fuss but obvious affection in Michell's smart staging."

Chicago Theatre Review - Highly Recommended

"...Once again, ShawChicago offers the savvy theatergoer, who revels in the sound of the voice and the unadorned authenticity of a playwright’s script, an opportunity to enjoy two hours of pure bliss. Mary Michell directs her gifted cast in a delightful, unpretentious production of one of Shaw’s best-loved comedies. But be warned: you may leave this performance with an unconscious yearning for chocolate creams."
