Amicable

Mckaw Theater
1439 W. Jarvis Chicago

Have you ever known someone who you definitely considered a friend and yet ...didn't like all that much? Have you ever been enamored with someone who didn't share a fraction of that same enthusiasm? This is a play about why it can be so hard to let these "relationships" die, and the group of people who are forced to do that anyway. Things end. And that's ok.

Chicago Reader - Somewhat Recommended

"...Compton seems to have absorbed the note somewhere along the writing process that—despite how it feels when you’re in your youth—the dissolution of weeks and months-long romantic relationships is not the end of the world, and one man hashing it out with his exes is not sustainably compelling drama. About halfway through, the story’s focus expands into richer territory, like the relationship between two sisters (Melanie McNulty, Abby Walburn) and the tribulations of a dancer (Walburn). By the end, director Tony Lawry’s production brings out some pretty compelling performances, including from fifth-grader Izzy Schafer, who has a lot put on her young shoulders and rises to the occasion."

Chicago Theatre Review - Highly Recommended

"...Ultimately, Amicable was a very enjoyable look at a very unenjoyable part of life. Like I said, I don't want to spoil the set up or the resolution, so what I'll say is this. Underneath that setup is a thoughtful and engaging look about what we owe each other and ourselves when a relationship ends."

"...AMICABLE teaches us some life lessons where sometimes we don’t always get what we want, sometimes people can’t change, and sometimes relationships can be worth fighting for. AMICABLE would be a good show for anyone who likes plays that explore relationships with some little twists along the way. If you're not a fan of shows exploring emotions or dialogue heavy shows, this show might not be the best fit for you."
