A Midsummer Night's Dream Reviews

"...While the story’s many subplots converge around the couplings of Lysander and Hermia and Demetrius and Helena, the ancillary characters shine as the instigators of comic relief, both physical and with well-timed verbal barbs. Barry Irving delivers as two charismatic taskmasters, Quince and Egeus, giving each nuanced differences while maintaining a thread of simmering, put-upon, “Do I have to do everything myself?” frustration. Jack Morsovillo is a charming ham as Bottom, the weaver who winds up with the head of a donkey. Ebby Offord is a mischievous, prancing Puck, bringing the otherworldly magic and gleeful moments expected of one of the Bard’s most iconic characters. Original music by Justin Cavazos is a fun addition, helping the production stick the landing with energy and comforting positivity."

"...Although the play was written more than four centuries ago, its popularity continues because the idea of mismatched partners is not only universal but resonates today as much as it did in 1595 when Shakespeare penned it. Indeed, it seems to be part and parcel of human nature for the wrong people to always be falling in love with the wrong people."

"...Midsommer Flight celebrates its tenth anniversary with a return to the play that launched the company, A Midsummer Night's Dream. Under the direction of Beth Wolf, the production is lean (running just a bit over ninety minutes), large, and altogether the stuff of a wonderful summer night out in Chicago's parks."

"...Midsummer Flight does an amazing job with a challenging project: they must make iambic pentameter comprehensible, not to mention audible in an outdoor environment. It’s hard work to perform outdoors with no backstage and with a picnicking audience spread Ravinia-style across the wings, and filling the extensive cast of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM is no picnic. Amazingly, Midsummer Flight not only pulls this off, but they offers it for free, in keeping with their commitment to inclusion. Last night’s performance was in Lincoln Park, but the troupe rotates across the city, performing all summer in Lincoln Park, Gross Park, Lake Meadows Park, Chicago Women’s Park & Gardens, and Touhy Park."

"...Midsommer Flight performs in natural sunlight and without amplified sound, just as in the Bard's day four centuries ago. Beth Wolf's sharp direction, talented cast and script adaptation brings Dream in at about 100 minutes with no intermission. (The original runs about three hours.)"

"...Fun and free, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a nice break from weighty things. If you want to laugh at someone, or yourself, or your lofty-headed former self, this may assist you."

"...Knowing all this, what a delight it is to sit on the grass and watch this talented, diverse troupe of actors perform one of Shakespeare’s most popular and accessible comedies, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The Midsommer Flight company has done other plays in the parks—“Twelfth Night,” “As You Like It,” “Two Gentlemen of Verona” and “Hamlet.” But it started with “Midsummer” in 2012—and the company has brought it back for its tenth anniversary, under the sure hand of founding artistic director Beth Wolf. There is music and laughter and unlike the evening news, you know it will come out alright in the end."
