Washer/Dryer Reviews
Chicago Tribune- Recommended
"...Toss in Wendee (Erika Napoletano), the tightly-wound co-op board president, and Sam (Omer Abbas Salem), Sonya's requisite gay wisecracking neighbor, and the ingredients are in place for a familiar romp through the growing pains of newlyweds. But even though there are some undeniably shaggy components to Shenoy's comedy, it largely succeeds on its own sunny terms. Ranganathan's Sonya is particularly interesting as a young woman struggling to integrate her desire for independence — represented by that hard-won co-op — with her longing for connection to another person. Some of the gags get stuck in the lint trap, but "Washer/Dryer" provides a pleasant snapshot of a couple learning to overcome territorial static."

"...The problem? The relationship includes four more nosy and temperamental parties: Sonya’s “best gay boyfriend” Sam from downstairs, rule-worshiping co-op board president Wendee, Michael’s busybody mother, Dr. Lee (played by a wonderfully exasperated and all-too-blunt Cheryl Hamada), and last but not least, Sonya’s beloved washer/dryer. Packed with too many comedic cases of misunderstanding and mistaken identity, the show could use more insight into the couple’s feelings for one another and connections to their culture, particularly Sonya's (whose family is never seen)."

"...“Washer/Dryer” is a lighthearted comedy that may take a while to heat up, but is highly entertaining once it does. However, the play is not without problems, principally staging. At times it can be difficult to see; audience members next to me leaned forward at one point to make out what was in a bag characters were looking in and holding up, because only those in the front could see clearly."
