Tomorrow Morning Reviews

"...Wythe isn't saying a lot that hasn't already been said about the challenges of matrimony. But that's never stopped anyone from creating songs about marriage - or stepping up to the altar. "The world must be peopled," says Benedick in "Much Ado About Nothing." And so too must composers continue to people the stage with couples old and young. Wythe's "Tomorrow Morning" has its share of cringeworthy moments, but it also has the courage of its own romantic convictions, which is no small thing in a confusing and cynical world."

"...In “Tomorrow Morning,” time past and time future are interwoven at almost every turn. And in the show’s revival by Kokandy Productions (the Chicago company that recently staged a top-notch production of “Heathers: The Musical”), the actors, under the direction of John D. Glover, live out a decade of their lives in a time frame that is enacted simultaneously."

"...Ashley Ann Woods’s scenic design and Johnny Buranosky’s props are another major reason for this production of Tomorrow Morning’s successful emotional connection; each corner of the stage is believable as a separate person’s home. Credit should also go to Michael J. Patrick’s clear sound balance, and to Kory Danielson’s musical direction for mostly avoiding the pinging-style of piano playing and vocal pushing that so often mars chamber musicals. Tomorrow Morning is a show that works best for people who can look back on what it’s like to build a life with someone, but anybody can appreciate the quality of the production."

"...Kokandy Productions, a theater company celebrating 6 years of bringing shows to Chicago, just keeps bringing us quality shows- one after another. As someone who sees a great number of productions per year, I thank you for the choices you make and the fulfillment of your "mission" to bring quality musicals to the smaller and intimate spaces of our city. Bravo! Their current production, "Tomorrow Morning" was written by Laurence Mark Wythe (book, music and lyrics) and might be classified as a "chamber musical" due to its great intensity, emotion, and story-telling. The music is handled by a single piano, and yet, filled the theater with the richness and sound that held our attention from start to finish ( by the way, 90 minutes, no intermission)."

"...This sublime, contemporary work, by a talented new voice in musical theatre, is Kokandy's latest, exquisite production. Composer and playwright Laurence Mark Wythe's heartwarming and earnest song cycle impresses all over again, especially as performed, directed and supported by this entire talented Chicago company. Singles will find this musical an enjoyable date night entertainment, while married couples will no doubt recognize many telling moments from their own lives. There's also a clever twist to Wythe's story that bears close attention, and will surprise even the most seasoned theatergoer. It's in this fresh, new story of love, marriage and how time heals everything that'll reward adult audiences night after night."

"...Despite my struggle to suspend logic in connecting characters, there is no denying this cast’s harmonies are terrific. Under the musical direction of the piano-playing Kory Danielson, the singing fills the space and even threatens to poke holes in the roof during powerhouse crescendos. Kokandy Productions has established itself as a solid musical theatre. TOMORROW MORNING is another example of their commitment to showcasing less familiar musicals and less-familiar-musical actors to Chicago. TOMORROW MORNING makes for a great date night this summer."

"...Tomorrow Morning doesn’t break any ground in musical theater, but that’s all right. After five years of reviewing their productions, I’d assert that it’s impossible for Kokandy to put out a less-than-solid product. Though it’s not a show that will stay with me for long, but I thoroughly enjoyed the love and the music."

"...These are the torrid dramas of a play premised on the sanctity of heterosexual marriage, in which even the young couple's fantasy sequence (impersonating a pool cleaner paying a visit to a married woman) is trivial and masturbatory. "Tomorrow Morning" depicts without finesse the idiocy of a social construct revealed for its inconsequence and the tantrums of those disappointed by that inevitable discovery."
