Today We Escape: Plays Inspired by Ok Computer Reviews

"...Don't expect to hear any snippets from the album. Despite some acoustic renderings before the performance, the decision to divorce the music itself from the endeavor left me scratching my head. There is an almost meditative mood the album evokes, loud moments and all. By contrast, "Today We Escape" fails to establish any mood, period, which is the real disappointment."

"...The strongest plays give off a soulful yet futuristic Twilight Zone vibe that feels sonically aligned with the British rockers. Randall Colburn's Terry (inspired by "Paranoid Android") is a disturbing look into the psyche of a grizzled session guitarist. Ted Brengle's B.E.M. (more literally inspired by "Subterranean Homesick Alien") details the chilling transformation of a lonely dermatologist into a pseudoscientific expert on extraterrestrials. Other pieces, like Natalie DiCristofano's There's No Place Like Hoyne (inspired by "Karma Police") feel gratuitously silly by comparison."

"...Perhaps the highest compliment payable to this collection of artists is that they did Radiohead justice. Today We Escape has an appropriate air of mystery, like a light flickering in the void of space, something to hold your imagination and fix you to your place in the universe. It is no small feat. The only question remains: what's next?"

"...So, as an evening, I’m giving ‘Today We Escape” a tentative recommendation, and here’s why. If you’re a Radiohead fan or are interested in a collection of plays that are doing some interesting things artistically, I’d say it’s probably worth your time to go see it. If you’re just interested to see some short plays together with no real connectivity between them, go in knowing that of the dozen plays, there are 5-6 standouts, though that leaves 6-7 that are just all right. Ultimately, if you’re just some person who wants to be entertained by a theatrical production for an evening, “Today We Escape” is more an exploration of theatrical adaptation and inspiration than it is a coherent story — though there are coherent stories within it."
