Thicker Than Water Reviews
Chicago Tribune- Somewhat Recommended
"...There's a low energy to these scenes (by design; Yates' stupor sets the pace) which is perhaps why Douglas Parker's script is filled with cutaways that ramp things up a bit, allowing everyone from Yates' husband to her social worker to the devil himself have a say. That last character - prone to faux poetic proclamations about humanity - is an allusion to Yates' increasingly delusional state of mind, but as a character he doesn't make much sense in what is otherwise a naturalistic format, nor does his presence offer insight into why this woman felt such overwhelming, murderous despair."

"...But its great strength is equally apparent, namely its meticulous humanizing of the woman who murdered her children to save them from hell and to bring the death penalty upon herself for being a terrible mother. Similarly, Genesis Theatrical's production, under first-time director Patrick Murphy, has its obvious flaws (lots of traffic flow problems, for starters), but its simple, straightforward approach lets nothing obscure its central horror. Melissa Nelson's near catatonic turn as Yates is gripping."
