The Mikado

The Mikado

The Den Theatre
1329-1333 N. Milwaukee Chicago

One of Gilbert and Sullivan's most beloved comic operas, The Mikado is set in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu, where the emperor has made flirting a capital offense. Into the town comes a wandering minstrel, who quickly falls for Yum-Yum, a beautiful young woman who is betrothed to another. The Japanese setting allowed Gilbert and Sullivan to slyly mask their commentary on contemporary British society while serving up their trademark mix of complications and merriment. A smash hit when it played at the Chopin Theatre and Steppenwolf's Garage, this production from The Hypocrites is presented promenade-style, putting you the audience inside the story as you move around the space with the actors.
