The Importance of Being Earnest

The Importance of Being Earnest

Athenaeum Theatre
2936 N. Southport Chicago

Two young gentlemen living in 1890's England have taken to bending the truth in order to put some excitement into their lives. John Worthing, seemingly straight and proper, has invented a brother Ernest, whose identity he adopts when in the city so he let his wild side out. As Ernest he woos his best friend, Algernon Moncrieff's cousin, the ravishing Gwendolen Fairfax. Algernon decides to visit John's young and beautiful ward, Cecily at the country manor. They both face a dilemma; both ladies have a determination to only marry a man whose name is Ernest. Things start to go awry when they all converge in the country and their deceptions are discovered, threatening to spoil their romantic pursuits, until they learn the importance of being earnest.
