The Food Show Reviews
Chicago Tribune- Somewhat Recommended
"...But the show is episodic - each segment is built around one performer and one dish. That's a cool idea, too, in principle, but the overall arc needs far more attention if there's to be some actual dramatic tension. Unlike the Neo-Futurists' regular and intimate Andersonville home, the space used for "The Food Show" is a huge, raw space in Avondale that comes with all kinds of unexplored possibilities for movement and staging and shared space."

"...The Food Show is at its best when the cast have a reason to come out of themselves. Either that, or genuinely to absorb us into them. Camacho's demonstration of searing a salmon is an example of the latter, providing an occasion for sexual innuendo as affecting as it is poorly concealed, and ruthlessly designed to make yet another audience volunteer squirm. The former is exemplified by sections that teach us something we may not already know, such as the tale of the scientists who martyred themselves to give us the Pure Food and Drug Act and a discussion of the five mother sauces in French cuisine. They're not chocolate fudge layer cake, but they'll do."

"...Self-consciousness being a cornerstone of the Neo-Futurist manifesto, the actors share personal anecdotes of food employed as seduction, consolation and filial myth. Most of these reflect secure childhoods, though mention is made of "food deserts" and regions of nourishment restricted by circumstance. Indeed, early in the show, a tube-and-beaker sculpture illustrates, in precise detail, how our bodies perish when deprived of the precious commodity under scrutiny, lest we trivialize its importance."

"...For those of you who have attended a Neo-Futurist production the newest one, “The Food Show” , will not surprise you ! For “newbies”, be prepared for a unique and special theatrical experience. The troupe is a collective of writer-director-performers who create theater that is a fusion of sport, poetry and a living newspaper ( I did not make this up, they use that as part of their “mission”) having created almost 1,000 plays. For years, we have ventured to Foster and Ashland, on the second floor to see what surprises they have is store for us. Tonight, I went to a new venue, and when I say NEW, I MEAN NEW!"

"...The Food Show should be commended for its engaging blend of comedy, plethora of poignant messages, and expert stage direction. The ultimate enjoyment of the viewer will most likely depend on the ability to roll with the variety on display, but the stories and themes explored here are well worth the price of admission. And if you sit in the first few rows, be sure to come hungry."

"...The Food Show is created by Dan Kerry-Hobert, with music by Ronnie Kuller. It is imaginative and quirky, yet still generally appealing for any audience member with an open mind. We are offered the chance to delve into the lives of the performers and understand their individual stories while appreciating the similar values that bring each one together. While it is above all a witty performance, The Food Show manages to foster a sense of community and open the minds of each attendee as we are invited to dinner."

"...When all is said and done though the performers are warm and inviting. Seeing "The Food Show" feels like five people opening their home to you. The music is good, the smells are stellar. Everything is just right for us to sit down and enjoy."
