The Chimes

The Chimes

The Greenhouse Theater Center
2257 N Lincoln Avenue Chicago

Though Charles Dickens is most often associated with another of his Christmas tales, The Chimes represents a comparable holiday offering from the famous author. Considered too dangerously radical in its time, the story is indeed a bit offbeat. Trotty, a poor ticket porter downtrodden by what he considers a wholly wicked world, finds his outlook altered to one of hope by the spirits of some church bells and their goblin attendants. And should you find yourself thinking, "Goblins? In a Christmas story?" consider the magic Dickens once wove with the same holiday and a trio of ghosts. So come experience a lesser-known Dickensian classic filled with all the colorful characters, social critiques and warm-natured life lessons he's renowned for.
