"...Under Dawn Arnold's well-ordered direction, a quartet of women act out the stories with a minimum of props, costumes and, thank goodness, emotional indulgence. Like Chekhov, they understand that carefully wrought surfaces convey psychological depths with great dramatic credibility. Not all the pieces cohere; "The Lady's Story," about an aristocratic woman's dead-end love for a mere civil servant, spirals into nothing. But otherwise the cast adequately convey Chekhov's genius for plumbing the depths of the quotidian. The fussy sotto voce business between stories adds a confused, unnecessary embellishment."
