Scary Tales 2015 Reviews

"...At least none of these shrunken stories outstays its welcome. But a few too many are perversely efficient at not delivering the goods, however promising the premises. These eight young actors acquit themselves well, but their scare tactics never really push the panic button.

"...This production suffers a lot from having been almost entirely the output of a single person. There needed to be someone else in the creative process to ask questions of the script and directing, and that clearly didn’t happen. I don’t like to bash such a clearly amateur attempt to put on a show purely for the company’s own love of performing. It’s no worse than the average student production. But when they’re charging fifteen dollars for a ticket, they’re fair game."

"...It is difficult to figure out what exactly the purpose of David Denman's "Scary Tales" was. Not a single one was scary: one or two managed to be disturbing but never in a satisfying way."

"...However, Denman’s work is uneven, to say the least. With poorly adapted or written material, uninspired direction featuring little creativity and performed by a cast whose theatrical talents are negligible, this production is sadly unimpressive. Because of various dreadfully rendered accents and actors who either shamelessly mug and scream their lines or listlessly mumble and stumble through their roles, this disappointing show gives the term “amateur” a bad name. The only scary element in this production is the $15 ticket price."
