"...Four Benches explores the aftermath of an accidental steambath killing. And the most solidly staged of the three, Debate, presents a show-within-a-show in which the Old and New Testament gods slug it out—the former reminding us that he gave us the ten commandments,"not the ten fucking suggestions." There's absolutely nothing ground-breaking or surprising here, but J. Christopher Brown's cast commit with goofball enthusiasm."

"...The entire almost-evening is discussed in that manner as though the theater is a clumsily disguised learning annex. The egotism, however, does not lie in what they do discuss, but rather what they don’t. Not a single time do these couples question whether the compilation is at all entertaining to them. Coen is a proven craftsmen of comedic wit, but for a relatively new comedy by one of film’s leading screenwriters, ”Almost an Evening” is actually quite commonplace and insipidly boring. Without a doubt, the funniest part of Coen’s play at Circle is the implication that it could ever incite an argument."

"...For those already close to the Circle Theatre, this fun but ineffectual play is worth visiting. For those who have to travel to Oak Park, however, the night becomes a bit of a stretch, and you may leave the theatre feeling like you had just experienced the title itself: almost an evening."
