The Pirates of Penzance

The Den Theatre
1329-1333 N. Milwaukee Chicago

An 80-minute exotic getaway featuring bathing beauties, philosophizing pirates, and grown men in remarkably short shorts The Hypocrites' production of The Pirates of Penzance has quickly become a non-traditional holiday favorite. Presented promenade-style, this unique production allows the audience to move around the space with the actors for a more immersive experience. The beloved comic musical tells the story of Frederic, a boy mistakenly apprenticed to a softhearted band of pirates (his hard-of-hearing nurse was told to take him to a ship's pilot). He wants to leave the pirates and live a law-abiding life with his true love, but his Leap Day birthday means his pirate apprenticeship lasts a lot longer than usual. After a series of zany mishaps, the lovable pirates make their peace with the police and Frederic gets his girl. Along the way it's a rollercoaster ride of swashbuckling action and merry music, featuring many of Gilbert and Sullivan's wittiest and most engaging tunes, including the immortal "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General."
