"...The show’s attempts to marry a child’s game with an adult’s reality mostly fall flat, due to an overreliance on referential material. Much like the numerous buzzfeed articles peddling cheap 90’s nostalgia through gifs or quizzes and youtube clips, “The Princess Peach Conspiracy” is usually satisfied with simply reminding you of things from Mario games without adding anything more. The few moments where the show brightens are when characters narrate pre-recorded in-game sequences, suggesting that maybe an MST3K-inspired sequel would yield more dividends. But as it stands, simply watching Mario characters lust and swear isn’t enough. It sacrifices the promising emptiness of the original creations without finding something interesting to fill in the blanks."
