Antigone

Oracle Theatre
3809 N. Broadway Chicago

This new version of Sophocles’ Antigone shows us to a fictional 1960s Thebes, wartorn and flooded with fear and unrest. In the midst of the disorder is a budding movement for women’s rights, growing with each passing day. But at the very center of everything stand a girl faced with her own death and the man who must kill her or lose his country. This adaptation returns the roar of rebelling to Sophocles’ classic text. Adapted and directed by Jack Bourgeios and staring Scott Olson as Creon.

  Antigone Review Round-Up

Windy City Times - Recommended

"...Bourgeois is to be commended, not only for his eloquent and articulate text, but for his perceptive grasp of the intergenerational conflicts prevailing during the era he proposes to invoke—an important factor, considering the number of playgoers likely to have first-hand recollections of the period under scrutiny. Audiences will find no facile stereotypes here, but instead, flawed personalities as vulnerable to error as they are capable of remorse and reparation. Legends may demand heroes and villains, but truth is never so simple."

"... All of this occasionally hits a bit too hard on the nose, but for the most part it’s a well written and beautifully acted exploration of the moments in which people find themselves being pushed too far. Such moments are those that spark revolutions."
