After Miss Julie

Piccolo Theatre
600 Main Street Evanston

This re-telling of Strindberg’s classic naturalist tragedy moves the action to Post-WWII London on the eve of election night, when the promising and idealistic Labour Party defeated the conservative incumbents on a platform of "Hope and Change". Miss Julie is a wealthy politician's daughter who finds herself entangled in a perilous web of class conflict, seduction and betrayal when she spends the evening celebrating with her father’s ambitious valet, John and loyal cook, Christine.

  After Miss Julie Reviews

Chicago Reader - Highly Recommended

"...It's an ingenious conceit, and Marber's taut plotting amplifies the original play's deadly stakes while downplaying its melodrama and misogyny. Marber even gives the servant's fiancee, Christine, a more satisfying—and unsettling—role in the affair than Strindberg does. In Melissa Albertario's measured staging for Focal Point Theatre Company, a nimble cast deftly navigate each turn of this twisted tale."

Chicago Theatre Addict - Recommended

"...Marber’s explosive and darkly satiric 70-minute play, which is receiving its Chicago premiere by the brand-new Focal Point Theatre Company, explores the power-shift between classes and the degree one will go in sacrificing one’s dignity to adhere to archaic social constructs. Things start slow, but soon boil over into chaos and disorientation as John begins to confront Miss Julie about her fascination with him."
