The Hundred Dresses

Royal George Theatre
1641 N. Halsted Chicago

Wanda Petronski speaks strangely, has a funny last name, and lives in the wrong part of town. Who would believe she has a closet full of one hundred beautiful dresses? The kids at Franklin Elementary School sure don't believe her. In The Hundred Dresses, Maddie Martin and Peggy Hawthorne learn first-hand the danger of stereotypes and harsh words. The Hundred Dresses is a poetic tale about the power of words and finding the courage to stand up for others, even if you are standing alone. For everyone ages 6 and up.

Chicago Tribune - Highly Recommended

"...With its world premiere of the musical “The Hundred Dresses,” based on the 1944 book by Eleanor Estes and featuring new songs by Ralph Covert of “Ralph’s World” fame, the Chicago Children’s Theatre has finally delivered on its promise to elevate the experience of children’s theater in this city. Here’s a show that offers the young people of Chicago an experience comparable in ambition, professionalism and, crucially, ambience to the city’s established adult institutions."

"...The score soars thanks to superb musical direction by Andra Velis Simon; musicians Jeff Bouthiette, Nicholas Davio and Eric Engelson, and the lustrous-voiced cast. Tommy Rapley's zesty choreography is ideal. And Kevin Depinet's revolving "little red schoolhouse," and Jacqueline Firkins' classic schoolgirl dresses are, like the show itself, both period perfect and timeless."

".... Sean Graney's colorful, relentlessly lively production for Chicago Children's Theatre doesn't entirely avoid the shrill cutesy-wootsyism that infects much of kids' entertainment these days, but G. Riley Mills's book admirably avoids easy answers while Ralph Covert's score is lovely and challenging."

"...When Wanda states that she has a hundred dresses and sixty pairs of shoes in her closet, the kids mocker her eventually forcing her to withdraw from the school. The kids learn a worthy lesson from Wanda’s parting gift. The lessons here are tame yet the show has sweet moments and fine musical numbers. The kids seemed to enjoy the show. Leslie Ann Sheppard’s strong vocals and Tyler Ravelson’s manic comedy enriched the show. Take your kids to this adult-proof show."

"...The Hundred Dresses is a pretty show: pretty music, pretty voices, pretty staging, and of course, pretty dresses. The 100 Dresses is also a children’s show. If you don’t get designated nap time or a half hour after lunch to play kickball, then you are probably not the target audience for Chicago Children’s Theatre. Luckily, however, The 100 Dresses is a great show; a musical that speaks to the hearts of anyone that has ever needed a friend."
