Phedra
New World Repertory Theater
923 Curtiss Street Downers Grove
Robert David MacDonald’s translation captures the dramatic beauty and power of Racine’s original French poetry. Based on ancient myths, the tragedy examines how love and unabated passions can destroy us all. “Phèdra” is cursed by the gods to love her step-son, Hippolytus, who hides a secret love affair of his own. Emotional, turbulent and sexy, Phèdra is a mythical soap opera for the contemporary audience. Directed by theater movement specialist Alison Henderson, the production will be based on movement theorist Rudolf Laban’s movement analysis

Review Round-Up
| Chicago Reader - Not Recommended
"... The acting is stiff and flat, the set is awkward and unattractive, and the costumes are unremarkable. Worse yet, the lead actors, Sarah Pinkham and Brian Barber, have no onstage chemistry. Though otherwise quite queenly in the title role, Pinkham never convincingly lusts after Barber, and Barber's hysterical reaction to her is so over the top (he seems more repulsed by the idea of kissing a girl than breaking the incest taboo) it's almost campy."
