Nice Work If You Can Get It Reviews

"...Adding to the "Delishious-ness" (I've borrowed that spelling from one of their song titles) is the fact that the production of this 2012 Broadway show - now receiving its "Chicagoland premiere" at Theater of the Center in Munster, Indiana, a venue dominated by Chicago talent - features co-direction by William Pullinsi and choreographer Danny Herman, and instantly brings back to mind the glory days of Pullinsi's Candlelight Dinner Playhouse. It also comes with a cast that would feel right at home on Broadway (where leading man Justin Brill has, not surprisingly, already been seen)."

"...By this trifle's very American end, the manufactured mayhem is settled in a sardonic resolution. Assorted crack-brained revelations happily level the playing field between thugs and toffs, necessary evil and unearned snobbery. It all kind of clicks: This spring fling really is nice work if you can see it."

"...Set in the Roaring Twenties, Nice Work If You Can Get It is a fast-paced musical filled with exciting dance numbers, Roaring 20's costumes and a cute love story between newly married New York playboy Jimmy Winter (Justin Brill) and the feisty bubbly bootlegger, Billie Bendix (the lovely Erica Stephens), who melts his heart. This new Broadway musical features a book by Tony Award winner Joe DiPietro, and a treasure trove of George and Ira Gershwin's most beloved, instantly recognizable tunes ("Let's Call the Whole Thing Off", "Someone to Watch Over Me", "'S Wonderful")."

"...The acting in this production was terrific, as there were strong performances all around. Everybody who was a principal role did outstanding work, and the ensemble was phenomenal, especially with their dancing skills. Returning to Theatre at the Center are Justin Brill as Jimmy Winter, Stef Tovar as Cookie McGee, John Stemberg as Duke Mahoney, Julie Baird as Elena, Laura Freeman as Duchess Estonia, and Annelise Baker as Jeannie Muldoon. Those who are making their TATC debut include Erica Stephan as Billie Bendix, Rick Rapp as Senator Max Evergreen, Debbie Diverde as Millicent Winter, and Jack Stempel as Chief Berry."

"...Smoothly directed by William Pullinsi with Herman, this is a smooth running production with an energetic and talented cast of players:Annelise Baker as Jeannie Muldoon (the gorgeous showgirl), Jake Stempel as Chief Berry, Debbie NiceWork CDiVerde as Millicent Winter (Jimmy's mother), Nathan Middleman, Kayla Kennedy, Tony Carter, Ann Delaney, Ryan Naimy, Amanda Compton LoPresti , Matt Casey and Megan Gill. As I always say, a show is only as good as its parts and the ensemble is a key part of the whole production."

"...This is an entertaining musical that’s light on story and heavy on song and dance. But when you have such delicious, delectable words and music, as found in the wonderful George and Ira Gershwin songbook, sung and danced with such energy and enthusiasm by a talented ensemble of triple threats, audiences can just sit back, relax, forget their toubles and enjoy all the fun, frolicking and fascinating rhythms."

"...So yes, their trappings may come and go, but the Gershwin rhythm is just as fascinating as it was nearly a hundred years ago, and the folks in Munster indeed make nice work of its latest incarnation. Do, do, do catch it if you need a sweet-and-lowdown spring tonic and nothing but.."
