My Fair Lady Reviews

"...This Light Opera Works show features two actors reprising their roles from the company's 2009 production of Lerner and Loewe's classic musical, based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. I didn't see that one, but it's clear why they were invited back: Nick Sandys as the upper-class linguist Henry Higgins and Cary Lovett as Alfred P. Doolittle, the unapologetic exemplar of the "undeserving poor," turn in delicious performances as flawed males on opposite ends of the social hierarchy."

"...Evanston's Light Opera Works (soon to be named Music Theatre Works) offered up their opening production of the 2016 season - My Fair Lady last night. I had seen their production of this work in 2009 and loved every minute, moment and emotion of that stellar production starring Nick Sandys as Professor Henry Higgins and the wonderful Natalie Ford as Elisa Doolittle. Ms. Ford only recently played the role again to much acclaim in Milwaukee where she currently resides."

"...My Fair Lady is one my of all-time favorite musical-containing a great score by Frederick Loewe, wonderful staging, with a bitingly witty book (by Alan Jay Lerner) based on Shaw's Pygmalion. Add a cast of major talents, My Fair Lady unfolds as a complete work of art. It sets the benchmark for musicals. Rudy Hogenmiller and conductor Roger L. Bingamen production is world class featuring terrific singers and two fine performances with Nick Sandys as Higgins and Elizabeth Telford as Eliza."

"...Classic works, brought to the stage is what Light Opera Works is all about! FYI- they will be changing their name to Music Theater Works next year, not for content , to be sure, but because many fear the word "opera" in their old name (36 years of quality in musical theater and more). So rest assured, you will continue seeing musicals such as their excellent "My Fair Lady" in Evanston. This production, finely directed by Artistic Director Rudy Hogenmiller has one major drawback; it will only be available to audiences thru June 12th, which is very little time to see a solidly built production such as this."

"...Unfortunately running for a limited two-week run, this beautiful production has so much to offer, both musically and dramatically. Rudy Hogenmiller has created an enchanting evening of theatre, very true to original 1956 Broadway production, that will transport audiences to the elegance and innocence of Edwardian England. As gorgeous-sounding as Lerner and Loewe’s Tony Award-winning musical score is, it’s Shaw’s original story that truly shines forth. Light Opera Works’ new production is guaranteed to make theatergoers want to “dance all night.”"
