"...Van Barham and the cast use the postage-stamp stage to great effect, especially in the dressing-room version of Gibson's long, nearly silent dining-room scene, where Annie physically wrestles Helen into submission. Lesinski and Love nail it, and fight choreographer Chris Carpenter deserves kudos for making it look dangerous up close. The lip-sync interludes at the Brass Connection, featuring Ed Jones as "Gloria Blaze," Kristopher Bottrall as "Bailey Legal" and Jamie Smith with a name that we can't print in a family newspaper (ditto for Annie's nom-de-drag) are exercises in excess that never derail the central story. And that story, as in the original, is about an extended family who must trust in love - tough and tender - in order to transcend limitations and self-inflicted fears."

"...It's an absolute joy to watch Helen's transformation, as she learns to use lipstick as decoration, not self-sabotage. More importantly, the blossoming beauty discovers that sounds make words and words make the world. (Here her big breakthrough comes when she can hand-spell, not "water" but V-O-D-K-A!) Not just sending up Anne Bancroft and Patti Duke, this "miracle" is up there with Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle singing about the rain in Spain, Galatea coming to life before an astonished Pygmalion and "Baby Louise" becoming Gypsy Rose Lee."

Art may provide entertainment, but its purpose is self-expression. This production, filled with love and laughter, is a sparkling celebration of that achievement."
