Matt and Ben Reviews

"...Kaling and Withers cleverly model their hour-long script on other plays about two dudes yoked together, including The Odd Couple, True West, and Waiting for Godot. The punch line is that this exploration of male friendship is performed by women. In First Floor Theater's production, Nora Bingham as Matt and Kate Healy as Ben excel at knockabout physical comedy, though the many pop culture jokes are already out of date."

"...Matt and Ben might sometimes lean towards portraying its title characters as caricatures of the real men that they’re based on, but this only serves to highlight the real developments, the real growth of the characters. Matt and Ben is more than a send-up, more than an opportunity to have a laugh at a couple of household names it’s also a richly imagined treatise on friendship, creativity, hard work, and faith."

"...MATT AND BEN is a tight, fun bromance. There are plenty of laughs and heartfelt moments. The show ends with the actual video clip of the real life twosome accepting the Academy Award. Since I observed the relationship reenactment courtesy of the tightly-bonded Healy and Bingham, the already emotional acceptance footage becomes even more personal to me. Through this MATT AND BEN fantasy flashback, I feel like I knew Matt and Ben before they hit it big! And now, I’m curious if they are still best friends. I’d like to see Kaling and Withers produce a “Matt and Ben 2.0” about the “Good Will Hunting” aftermath."
