Macbeth Reviews

"...With their world-class talent and deep understanding of Renaissance drama, there are few artists better equipped for cultivating young audiences. While planning to see my own first Short Shakespeare, I was a bit unsure of the company's selection of Macbeth. It is already Shakespeare's shortest play, and I wasn't sure how they could abbreviate it further without reducing it to caricature. I have also seen Macbeth or an adaptation of it four times in the last four years, and am getting fatigued. However, this production is admirable, and the performance I saw fully served its purpose of captivating young audiences and inviting their interest."

"...The cast is wonderful with Chris Genebach (Macbeth) and Lanise Antoine Shelley (Lady Macbeth) very convincing both in their descent into madness, as well as in their passion for one another. Overall this is a very talented cast and it is truly a joy to see them performing on what is one of the nicer stages in Chicago. Although shortened to a seventy-five minute production, the action did not at all seem rushed along (although a full production would probably have allowed for more seamless character development). Shakespeare novices and Shakespeare veterans are both likely to be impressed by this production."

"...Chris Genebach’s Macbeth is simply one of the best portrayals I have ever seen, every intention crystal-clear, each emotion, however unhinged, gut-driven. Lanise Antoine Shelley is a chilling Lady Macbeth; her hand-scrubbing scene will burn in your memory. Nicholas Harazin graduates from some-time ingénue with his leading-man MacDuff, and Steven Lee Johnson’s Fleance springs into fully-fleshed kingship with few scenes and fewer lines. Timothy Edward Kane’s verse-coaching causes every line to trip from the tongues, countenancing the readiest understanding of Shakespeare’s sovereignty."
