Lifeboat

Filament Theatre
4041 N. Milwaukee Avenue Chicago

Written by Nicola McCartney and directed by Filament Artistic Director Julie Ritchey, Lifeboat is based on the true story of Bess Walder and Beth Cummings, two teenage girls from England. As war is declared in Britain, Bess and Beth are selected among other children to leave Britain for the safety of Canada. On Friday September 17, 1940, their ship, carrying 90 evacuees was torpedoed by a German U-boat leaving only eleven of the evacuees alive. As the ship sank, the two fifteen year old girls clung to an upturned lifeboat for 19 terrifying hours. Lifeboat is the inspiring true story of these two girls who survived in the face of despair.
