Johnny Johnson

Johnny Johnson

Stage 773
1225 W Belmont Ave Chicago

Chicago Folks Operetta’s production of Kurt Weill’s rarely heard musical gem, Johnny Johnson. It is World War I. The United States of America, having previously pledged to remain neutral, is pulled into the fight to make the world safe for democracy "over there." Lowly American tombstone cutter and unwitting pacifist Johnny Johnson has been persuaded to enlist in the U.S. army both by his sweetheart, Minny Belle Tompkins, and by President Woodrow Wilson's promise of "a war to end all wars." But confronted by the horrors of the trenches in France, he is outraged at the absurdity of it all. Using a bit of laughing gas and plenty of moxie, he fools the Allied generals into calling a cease-fire. The year 2017 is the 100th Anniversary of the U.S. entry into the First World War. Kurt Weill’s exotic 1936 score is one of his best, and Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Green’s clever story is more relevant than ever. With a 14 piece orchestra and some of Chicago’s finest singers!
