Jesus The Jew at The Greenhouse Theater Center

Jesus The Jew

The Greenhouse Theater Center
2257 N Lincoln Avenue Chicago

James is given a choice: renounce his brother or be killed. The problem: his brother is Jesus of Nazareth and James is the leader of all of Jesus' followers for 30 years since the resurrection. Based on a wealth of research, JESUS THE JEW takes us back to the birth of Christianity and the transformation of Judaism, with two Jewish brothers and their four siblings growing up in Nazareth. Through memory and storytelling, James reveals his insights into Mary of Magdala, his archrival Apostle Paul and his misunderstood brother, as he faces the ultimate decision and his greatest test of faith.

Chicago Reader - Somewhat Recommended

"...Forum Productions' one-man show is a tedious deep dive into what we're told is "another side" of Jesus-provided by his brother James (Steven Stafford) as the latter faces imminent execution. Penned by William Spatz, the meandering piece comes off as preachy propaganda, though it's not clear on whose behalf, as James tears down Paul the Apostle for bastardizing the teachings of Jesus."

Around The Town Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...“JESUS THE JEW As Told By His Brother James” is an intelligent, thoughtful look at the legend of Jesus. Considering that I grew up Catholic, I probably shouldn’t have been so intrigued by the content, but I heard things that I’ve always thought were the real truth, starting with the fact that Jesus had siblings! This one-man show kept my attention riveted to the stage – no gimmicks required! Forum Productions stages “JESUS THE JEW” at the Greenhouse."

Picture This Post - Somewhat Recommended

"...This show is an example of how someone can turn to their faith in times of crisis. Eventually, Jeremy finds that he should be more like his brother as James did with Jesus. Upon leaving the theater, an audience member remarked they liked the show, personally I felt it was too dry. There wasn’t much connection between the two relationships, but if you’re looking to see a show that explores Jewish tradition and find out some unknown facts about Jesus’ life, this show is for you."
