I Am Who I Am (The Story of Teddy Pendergrass) Reviews

"...A 15-person cast and a seven-person band run down nearly two dozen hits from its titular star, here played by Rashawn Thompson and Deverin Deonte at different musical and personal phases of his life. Deep cuts by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and tributes from Teddy 25 round things out. The ensemble is the true star here, especially company regulars like Jessica Seals, Kyle Smith, and Rueben Echoles."

"...I Am Who I Am is more Soul than story, and without much contextual, story relevance to the music, one’s appreciation of Pendergrass’ songs is either personal or aesthetic. Its deficiency of actual drama notwithstanding however, this musical concert-qua-theatrical production is still high on entertainment if you’re partial to Soul music. Just don’t expect any dark and juicy revelations: this show’s all feel-good praise."

"...Fortunately the singing comes to the rescue, especially in the second act. The songs include a selection of Teddy's greatest hits with some curious exclusions, such as "Close the Door," "I Can't Live Without Your Love," and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," all nominated for Grammy Awards. But numbers like "Turn Off the Lights" and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" give Deonte and especially Johnson plenty of opportunity to melt the hearts and churn the libidos of the ladies in the house."
