Four years after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, Eugene de Rastignac, a poor student from the provinces with distant noble roots, determinedly climbs an upward path. He encounters obstacles that make him question whether love is compatible with ambition or power with happiness. Based on the acclaimed Balzac novel, Father Goriot, the story involves Eugene's friendship with an old grain merchant, Goriot, who sacrificed his ill-gotten fortune to buy his two lovely daughters--Anastasie and Delphine-an upper class life. The will to succeed and the disillusionment of self-empowerment make a volatile mix in the minds and hearts of city dwellers in a rapidly changing world.
