Dirty Butterfly Reviews

"...As they each become obsessed with her-Amelia possessed by the desire to clean up after her both figuratively and literally, voyeuristic Jason by the desire to "save" Jo-it becomes clear she's being brutalized so badly in bed that she's bleeding internally and may die. Sensitively directed by Azar Kazemi, Dirty Butterfly is as memorable and profound as it is brutal."

"...The play begins with all three characters at once recounting their own-very different-experiences surrounding Jo's abuse while also poking holes in the other characters' interpretations. It's almost like a conversation, only no one's actually listening to each other. The set, by Milo Blue, is a series of semi-opaque platforms and backdrops, backlit so they seem like a series of windows with the shades all drawn. The effect is a world in which everyone is cut off, hidden away-their only glimpse of the outside world coming through the shadows and whispers that penetrate their walls. Sound familiar?"

"...Try as we could though, the foreign vernacular of this script was such that we spent almost all of our energies trying to follow the action. It strikes this reviewer that this is probably a great read, if you have time to google the colloquialisms to catch their drift. As a performance though, we walked away impressed by the direction (Azar Kazemi) and certainly the actors, but lost in a bit of a "huh???""
