The Lady's Not for Burning by Christopher Fry was written in 1948 at the height of the House Un-American Activities Committee hearings following World War II, although the play takes place during the Middle Ages. Written in verse resembling Shakespeare’s pastoral comedies, it is a poetic, romantic dark comedy about an accused witch on her way to be burned at the stake and her great desire to live versus a war-weary, disillusioned soldier in despair with a great desire to die.
