Description:

The Devonshire Playhouse will hold auditions for "Treasure Island." This bold adaptation features your favorite characters as well as new strong women leads! The sweeping saga respectfully holds to its roots while pushing the story into a vibrant collage of energy, danger and swashbuckling on stage. Actors of all genders from the age of 13-120 are encouraged to step into a lively tale of Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins that inspired Hollywood before anyone ever knew the name of Jack Sparrow. Not a musical but traditional shanties transition scene to scene. No singing experience required. Directed by Nationally Recognized stage combat instructor (DAI) and licensed Tall Ship Captain Orion Couling. The show features a diverse cast of many age ranges and stays true to character as portrayed in the book. Auditions will be held by appointment on Wednesday & Thursday December 2 & 3 2015 / 6-10 p.m. at The Devonshire Cultural Center. Though walk-ups are allowed, appointments are strongly encouraged.

Characters *Black Dog: An enemy of Billy Bones that once served on the same crew as him. He's the first one to catch wind of Billy's whereabouts and goes in search of the treasure map from him. He does not last very long in the play (ie: play opens with him dying) Must play as adult.

*Billy Bones: An expirate that resides at the Admiral Benbow Inn. His owning of Flint's map is what begins the store. He's a drunkard and has a deepset fear of a "one legged man" that he once served with. A surly and rude braggart. Must play as adult.

Jim Hawkins (Young): The son of an innkeeper. In his early teens. The one that we view most of the story through the eyes of. Comes aboard the Hispaniola as a cabin boy. He is a the epitome of the young hero. Maybe be acted by a guy or girl but is male character. Does have a stage kiss. Fights.

Master Jim Hawkins: The first person narrator of the story. Older now likely in his middle ages. A respectable and prosperous merchantman and owner of The Benbow Inn. Actor should have a strong and emotive voice

Kate Livesey: The ward of Doctor Livesey. An orphan after both her mother and father were lost to the sea. It is revealed later on in the show that she is the daughter of Britt Gunn the madwoman that is marooned upon Treasure Island. Kate is cunning, brave and clever. In her early teens. Affectionate towards Jim Hawkins. Does have a stage kiss and sings

Pirates: (Shelley, Razzel, Weazel, Ben, Harry): Various pirates: each pirate a distinctive character, devised to fill out the ranks. All fight.

*Blind Pew: A ruthless and bloodthirsty pirate that will stop at nothing to get his hands on Billy Bones map. Once served under Captain Flint. Dies during the pirates attack on the Benbow Inn. Typically played as the oldest pirate.

Tom Redruth: One of the Squire's faithful servants. Loyal and brave. Dies during the storming of the blockage.

Squire Trelawney: A Bristol nobleman. Trelawney arranges and funds the voyage to the island where the map says the treasure is located. He is too trusting but not entirely foolish. Blustering and occasionally bumbling but capable of holding his own in a fight.

Joyce: One of the Squire's servants. After Redruth's death (which the Squire takes particularly hard), Joyce attempts to step in to fill his place as a bodyguard for the Squire.

Dr. Livesey: Calm, rational and wise. The Doctor is steady in the face of potential danger. He is the guardian of Kate and keeps a close eye out on Jim Hawkins as well. He is fair and just, agreeing to treat the mutinous crew of pirates that have been wounded as if they were his own patients. This part might be considered for a woman

Long John Silver: The cook aboard the Hispaniola. Charismatic and disarming. Silver once sailed as the first mate to Captain Flint. He is now waiting for the right time to spring his trap on the rest of the crew. He must spark. Its also a challenging physical role.

Tom Morgan: Not especially bright, but what he lacks in brains and cunning he makes up for in bloodthirst. Morgan is one of the mutineers that attempts to kill Jim but Silver dissuades him otherwise.

Captain Smollett: The Captain is blunt and forthright. He is a man that will call a spade a spade. He is not thrilled with the crew that has been brought onto the Hispaniola or the reason that they are setting sail but he is a professional and will tend to the job that he was hired for. He takes strong command of his own ship and will not back down to the likes of mutineers and pirates.

Arrow: First mate of the Hispaniola. Easily coerced by alcohol. Known to be drunk while on watch. Mysteriously disappears halfway through the voyage.

Hobbs: Originally part of Smollett's crew, Hobbs gets pulled into the pirate's mutiny. However, when he realizes how far the mutiny has gone and how many good men were lost he attempts to back out of it. Silver kills him.

Israel Hands: Israel Hands is the coxswain of the Hispaniola. One of the more deadlier, bloodthirsty members of the crew. He is one of the mutineers, and he tries to kill Jim Hawkins. However, Jim winds up killing him instead.

Stepps: One of the mutineers. Easily spooked by superstition and supernatural activity.

Abraham Gray: originally a member of the mutineers, Gray decides to join the Captain and his crew when the Captain cajoles him over. He's a good and trustworthy and brave man.

Brit Gunn: A female sailor, once a member of Captain Flint's crew. Marooned on Treasure Island by Capt. Flint so that she eventually went mad. Later revealed that she is the mother of Kate.

George Merry: One of the mutineers, one of the last standing

Murry: One of the mutineers, One of the mutineers, one of the last standing
