The Drowning Girls

Pay: Stipend

Description:

Bessie, Alice and Margaret have two things in common: they are married to George Joseph Smith and they are dead. Surfacing from the bathtubs they were drowned in, they three breathless brides gather evidence against their womanizing, murderous husband by reliving the shocking events leading up to their deaths. Based on the "Brides in the Bath" murders in England at the beginning of the 20th century, The Drowning Girls is told from the perspective of the brides. Their narratives are woven together with poetic language and rhythms, each telling their story from beyond the grave - their hopes and dreams of life and marriage, their choices and their regrets.

Actors should be aware that much of the play will take place within three bathtubs and they will be working with water. Actors will play multiple characters and will be using movement and music as essential elements of storytelling. Experience with physical theatre and willingness to explore and improvise are a plus.
