Bad Jews

Pay: Yes

Description:

Nothing brings out the worst in a family like a funeral. Daphna is the most devout Jew in the Feygenbaum family. Just ask her. Her cousin Liam is the most deserving first-born. Just ask him. Don't ask Liam's brother Jonah anything. In this savagely funny comedy, long standing (and not-so-buried) antipathies boil up in a battle between two cousins over a treasured family heirloom. Stir in the identity curation of the Facebook generation and you get one of the funniest, wisest, most excruciating comedies you'll see this year.

Seeking:
Daphna Feygenbaum [Female, Jewish, reads 22 years old] Liam and Jonah's first cousin. In the playwright's description, "2/3 body, 1/3 hair. Thick, intense, curly, frizzy, long brown hair". She is sharp and has a dry wit which she uses to cover her deep insecurities. She is passionate about her connection to the Jewish culture and religion. She feels like a know-it-all and has an answer or a question for everything. While her blunt, berating can come off as severely judgemental and quick, the audience should still understand it is passion driven and that she does genuinely have a good heart - she just doesn't know how to express herself in the best light.

Liam Haber [Male, Jewish, reads 25 years old] Daphna's older cousin. University of Chicago Japanese Culture soon-to-be PhD student. Former Fulbright scholar in Japan. He is intelligent, super winning and sharp. He is sophisticated in energy but acts out like a brute when upset. His masculinity becomes apparent when he argues. He knows how to have status in a room. "Has as much of a sense of humor as an overdue library book". Ruthless in his opinion of Daphna. She has lost his respect seemingly a long time ago. Liam is genuinely in love with Melody.

Jonah Haber [Male, Jewish, reads 21 years old] Liam's younger brother, Daphna's younger cousin. Sometimes a UVM sophomore. Opposite of his brother in the sense that he is more brawn than intellectual - which he is insecure about. He has a big heart and clearly is the one who is the peace keeper. He is a great listener but never wants to take sides or cause a stir. Doesn't like confrontation. Compassionate. He's the guy who doesn't need much, uncomplicated, he lives life very presently. Likes video games, doesn't feel super invested in school yet, just living life and trying to keep the peace.

Melody [Female, Blonde, Blue Eyed, Delawarean, reads 24 years old] Liam's girlfriend. From Delaware. Unassuming. Gentle in nature. Works for a non-profit. In words of the playwright, "she looks like someone who could have been abducted when she was nine but returned to her parents unharmed". She is a good person, trying to find the good in every situation, desire to be the problem solver. She is a peace keeper by nature but isn't afraid of being challenged. Her "backbone" in the conflict of the situation is a bit surprising. She majored in opera in undergrad but couldn't handle the pressure of auditioning. Actor MUST BE COMFORTABLE SINGING - however classically trained voices are not needed as she is not impressively talented, but she isn't terrible either. Script specifies blonde, blue eyes.
