The UnderGround Effect is a short play that explores racism in the Black community, young love, social norms, and the controversial topic of interracial love. The play takes place in modern times at a high school in a suburb down South.
Type/Restrictions:
-Jakira Clemens (Main character) - African-American, female, high school senior, very smart, "no" is stuck in her vocabulary, a little stubborn, seeks trial and error, desperately searches for a prom date (Age 16-18)
-Zachary "Zach" Romero - Caucasian, male, high school senior, quarterback on the football team, popular in school, has a "player" demeanor, persuasive, has a great sense of humor, laid back (Age 16-18)
-Lawry - African American, male, Jakira's friend, nerdy, smart, wise but makes faulty decisions, helpful, down to earth, faithful (Age 16-18)
-Constance - African American, female, Jakira's best friend, a little "attitudish", open-minded but a little opinionated (Age 16-18)
-Marion - African American, male, Lawry's friend, a class clown, follows modern trends (16-18)
-Mr. Sinclair - Male, Jakira's wanna-be strict sociology teacher, a pushover, tries to control his classroom, remains professional (African American) (Age 16-18)
-There will be other minor roles to fill as well. (Age 16-18 and 30s-40s)
Rehearsal dates and times are: Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00pm - 8:00pm for the entire month of October and also Tuesday October 21st.
Tech dates and times are: November 3rd
Performance dates are: November 8th
Bring a copy of your headshot and resume that we may keep. Prepare a 1-2 minute monologue of a play of your choice. You may audition for a specific role if desired (please specify which role in your email). Actresses interested in auditioning for the main role of "Jakira" will be required to read a monologue from the actual script.
