A masterpiece, generally considered America's first true musical, Jerome Kern & Oscar Hammerstein II's SHOW BOAT premiered in Washington, DC in 1927 and was a watershed moment in the history of American musical theatre. Compared to the trivial and unrealistic light musical comedies and "Follies"-type musical revues that defined Broadway in the early 20th century, SHOW BOAT was a radical departure in musical storytelling, marrying spectacle with seriousness. SHOW BOAT was the first American musical that openly depicted and addressed large social issues like inequality, alcoholism, gambling and racism. Featuring one of the greatest scores, including numbers such as Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man, SHOWBOAT was the major turning point for theatre in America.

Taking place over fifty years, 'Show Boat' tells the story of a showboat acting family and their struggles with race, gambling, alcoholism and poverty. In the beginning of the show, Captain Andy runs an extremely successful show on his ship 'The Cotton Blossom.' Unfortunately, after it is discovered that his leading lady, Julie, is part black, she and her leading man boyfriend are forced to quit the show. As a replacement, Captain Andy uses his daughter, Magnolia, and a young gambler, Gaylord Ravenal. Magnolia and Gaylord soon fall in love but love alone is not enough and Magnolia must return to the showboat to raise their daughter.
