The Collective Theatre Company will be holding auditions for Hoodoo Love by Katori Hall on Friday June 29 and Saturday, June 30th 2012. Callbacks will be held on Sunday, July 1, 2012.
A tale of love, magic, jealousy and secrets. Toulou escapes from the Mississippi cotton fields in the 1930s to pursue her dream of singing the blues in Memphis. When she meets a rambling blues man, the notorious Ace of Spades, her dreams are realized in a way she could never have imagined. Written in vivid language that captures the blues, Hoodoo Love is a major debut.
Characters
Toulou : 20's-"A young woman who runs away from the cotton fields of Mississippi to the bluesy streets of Memphis. In stature she is tiny, but her presence makes her seem taller than she is". Must be able to sing: blues, jazz, gospel and similar styles. Must have good physicality and the ability to move expressively.
Candylady: 50's-60's-"A former slave and the Hoodoo madame of Beale Street with a timeless essence, yet the quick tongue of a youngin'".
Ace of Spades : late 20's early 30's-"A young, sexy, ramblin' bluesman with a 'behind like a caboose' nd hands that can play the blues out of any woman's back." Actors with blues guitar playing experience and experience playing the harmonica are encouraged to consider this role. The ability to sing in styles similar to blues, jazz, and gospel is also preferred.
Jib : late 20's early 30's- "Toulou's older brother, a born-again Christian missionary".

Material To Prepare:
Appropriate sides will be emailed upon the scheduling of your appointment. Also, prepare one song similar to the styles of blues, jazz, and gospel. If requested to sing, be prepared to do so acapella.
